Chelsea Handler Says SNL Snubbed Her, Jen Aniston Friendship Is Hard

Publish date: 2024-06-02

She’s got it rough! Chelsea Handler appeared on HuffPost Live on Thursday, Oct. 9, and dished on everything from the times she was snubbed by Saturday Night Live to the difficulties of being besties with Ms. Jennifer Aniston

The comedienne, 39, was chatting about using her friends as inspiration for her material, but said she would never cross the line with her closest pals — a group that includes famous faces like Aniston and Sandra Bullock.

“My friends who are really private, I won’t talk about them whether they’re famous or not,” Handler said. “If my friends are really private and it’s bothersome to them, I wouldn’t do that [but] I do a little bit more than a lot of them are comfortable with.”

However, Handler added that while she may be a risky friend, Aniston, 45, is equally hard to be close with.

“Everywhere I go, people ask me about Jennifer Aniston’s wedding,” the Chelsea Lately alum explained. “Everywhere I go. I always say to her, I’m like, ‘Being friends with you is a burden. You think it’s hard to be friends with me? Do you know what it’s like to walk down a red carpet and go, ‘When are Jen and Justin getting married?’ Like I’m in charge of that.'”

The best-selling author then touched upon another relationship in her life — an often strained one with the powers that be behind SNL.

“SNL asked me to host… I ran over there and they said, ‘You’re gonna host,'” she told HuffPost Live. “I was doing Radio City Music Hall that night. I had three sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall. I went over [and] they said, ‘We have to have you host!’ My agent called, and he’s like, ‘You’re hosting SNL — they’re going to give you a date in the fall.’ I go, ‘Great! Perfect!’ And then it never happened.”

“Initially I was upset and then I got over it,” Handler continued. “It came up again [with] my new book Uganda Be Kidding Me. I said, ‘Okay, great. Well, they blew me off last time. I don’t know what the issue was.'” Handler has yet to be booked for the show.

“I think the thing I heard was something like, ‘The writers have a problem anytime we bring on a comedian,’ which is complete nonsense,” she explained. “Sarah [Silverman]‘s hosted it, Lena Dunham‘s hosted it. If you don’t like me, that’s okay. I’m a big girl. I have a lot of people who don’t like me — I kinda get off on it to a degree… I feel bad for people who can’t just say, ‘Listen, you’re just not our cup of tea.'”
