Twitter Cracking Down on Internet Bullies After Zelda Williams Quits

Back off, trolls! After Robin Williams’ grieving daughter Zelda Williams quit Twitter on Wednesday, Aug. 13 after getting harassed by cruel users following her father's suicide, Twitter released a statement stating they're cracking down on Internet trolls.

Zelda, whose famous father took his own life on Monday, Aug. 11, shared with followers that she was "shaking" after tormentors sent her cruel tweets including a Photoshopped image of her late dad's corpse. The 25-year-old actress went on to urge followers to report the trolls, only to then delete the tweet and later state she "should've risen above.” (She eventually quit the social media platform entirely on Aug. 13.)

"We will not tolerate abuse of this nature on Twitter," Twitter's vice president of trust and safety Del Harvey said in a statement following the disturbing incident. "We have suspended a number of accounts related to this issue for violating our rules and we are in the process of evaluating how we can further improve our policies to better handle tragic situations like this one. This includes expanding our policies regarding self-harm and private information, and improving support for family members of deceased users," Harvey added.

In a statement released to Us Weekly, Zelda also addressed the haters. "As for those who are sending negativity, know that some small, giggling part of [my dad] is sending a flock of pigeons to your house to poop on your car. Right after you've had it washed. After all, he loved to laugh, too," she said.
